Game Formats on GameBook, part 1 – We call them the classics

In the world of gaming, there are certain game formats that stand the test of time and have become known as the classics. These games have been played for decades and are still enjoyed by gamers of all ages. In this two-part series, we will explore some of these classic game formats and how they have evolved over the years.

One of the most iconic game formats is the platformer. Platformers are games where players navigate a character through levels by jumping from platform to platform. The goal is generally to reach the end of the level while avoiding obstacles and enemies. One of the earliest and most well-known platformers is the Super Mario series. First released in 1985, Super Mario Bros. set the standard for platformers and has since spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs.

Another classic game format is the side-scrolling shooter. In these games, players control a character or vehicle as they move from left to right, shooting at enemies and avoiding obstacles. The Contra series is a prime example of a side-scrolling shooter. Originally released in 1987, Contra is known for its intense action and challenging gameplay.

Puzzle games are another popular classic game format. These games challenge players to solve puzzles or complete tasks using logic and strategy. Tetris, first released in 1984, is one of the most well-known puzzle games of all time. Players must rotate and place falling blocks to create complete lines and clear the board. The game’s simple yet addictive gameplay has made it a favorite among gamers for decades.

Role-playing games (RPGs) are a classic game format that allows players to take on the role of a character and immerse themselves in a fictional world. Players can explore the game world, interact with NPCs, and complete quests to progress the story. The Final Fantasy series is one of the most iconic RPG franchises, known for its engaging storylines and memorable characters.

These are just a few examples of the classic game formats that have stood the test of time. In part 2 of this series, we will explore some more recent game formats that have become popular in the gaming world. Whether you prefer platformers, shooters, puzzles, or RPGs, there is a classic game format out there for everyone to enjoy.
