Hurricane Sandy Watered Down Our Second College Tournament

July 13, 2024

Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the East Coast in late October of 2012, causing devastation and destruction in its wake. While the storm primarily affected coastal areas, its effects were felt far and wide. One unexpected casualty of the storm was our second college tournament, which was set to take place during the same weekend that Sandy made landfall.

The tournament had been months in the making, with teams from colleges all over the region eager to showcase their skills on the field. However, as the storm approached and the forecast grew increasingly dire, it became clear that the tournament would have to be postponed. The safety and well-being of the players and spectators had to be the top priority, and it was clear that holding the tournament in the midst of a hurricane was not an option.

As the storm made its way up the coast, bringing with it torrential rain and strong winds, it quickly became apparent that the tournament would have to be canceled altogether. The fields were waterlogged, and the playing conditions were simply too dangerous for the games to proceed. It was a disappointing turn of events for all involved, as months of hard work and preparation went to waste.

Despite the disappointment, the decision to cancel the tournament was ultimately the right one. Safety must always come first, and the risks of playing in such extreme weather conditions were simply too great. While it was certainly a setback for the teams and organizers, it was a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

In the end, Hurricane Sandy may have watered down our second college tournament, but it also served as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of Mother Nature. It was a stark reminder that we must always be prepared for the unexpected and be willing to adapt and make tough decisions when necessary. And while the tournament may have been lost, the spirit of competition and camaraderie that it fostered will always remain.
